Investing with a self-directed IRA
## How to invest using your IRA
1. Navigate to the company's campaign page to set up your investment.
2. Enter the amount you'd like to invest in the box on the right side of the page and click the "Invest" button to open the investment editor.
3. Under the "Investor Info" section, either (1) click "Edit" and click the "IRA" button or (2) click "Invest with an IRA or another entity", which drops you directly to the "IRA" tab.
4. Fill in the required fields, which are:
- **Legal Name:** use the name of your unique IRA entity
- Typically this is something like: *[IRA Provider Name] **FBO** [Your Name] **#**[Your Account Number]*
- Example: *STRATA Trust Company FBO Jane Smith #123456789*
- **Address:** use your residential address
- **EIN:** input your SSN for this field
- **My Title:** *Account Owner*
5. Follow the remaining prompts to fund your investment, agree to the legal terms, and click the button at the bottom of the page to continue.
6. On the last page, input your IRA provider's contact email. We will use this email address to send supporting documentation so that your investment can be approved and funds can be transferred.*
---
**Certain IRA providers may request additional documents. It's important that you confirm with your IRA provider if they require additional information in order to transfer funds. If you aren't sure, or if your IRA provider has questions for the Wefunder team, please connect your IRA contact with our team at support@wefunder.com and we'll be happy to help!*
## What happens after you set up the investment
Investing through an IRA requires coordinating with your IRA provider directly, and we work hand-in-hand with your custodian to make it happen. Here's the typical flow:
1. Once you've set up the investment and entered your IRA provider's email, our Investor Success Team is alerted that a new IRA investment has come in.
2. We reach out to you and your custodian to find out what documentation they require before they'll fund the investment. This usually includes a blank subscription agreement for the raise, the Wefunder SPV LLC operating agreement and formation documents, and our wire info.
3. Once your custodian has everything they need, they wire the funds to our escrow account using the instructions we provide.
4. After your investment is officially confirmed and your contracts are counter-signed, we send your custodian a copy of the executed subscription agreement to close the loop.
**Timeline:** The average funding timeline is 5-7 business days once all documents have been submitted by our team and approved by your custodian. Every custodian's process is different, so timelines can vary.
**A note on deadlines:** If the company's fundraise closes while your IRA process is still in progress, the investment can't be confirmed. If your custodian has strict document deadlines, let us know so we can prioritize your paperwork before the raise closes.
## Instructions by provider
Every custodian is a little different. A few common ones:
- **Alto IRA:** We set up an offering on Alto's site and send you a direct invitation to invest with your Alto account.
- **STRATA Trust:** Reply to let us know you're using STRATA. We'll fill out STRATA's PIIRL form online and send them a copy of your subscription agreement, among other steps.
- **Entrust or Equity Trust:** Reply and let us know which provider you use so we can proactively reach out to their team.
- **Any other provider:** Share your custodian's email address so we can reach out, or introduce us directly. We'll find out which supporting documents they require and make sure they have the correct wire info before sending funds.
