Selling or transferring investments
Sometimes you need to change who owns your investment or transfer it to someone else. Both involve updating your ownership, but they work a bit differently.
## What are you doing?
**Changing Investment Ownership (Who It Belongs To):**
You're moving your investment from personal to business ownership (SSN to EIN), or transferring it from one entity into your own name.
**Selling or Transferring to Someone Else:**
You've found a buyer and want to transfer your investment stake to them.
## For changes within your ownership
Whether you're changing to business ownership or consolidating into your name, here's the process:
**Information We'll Need:**
Fill out [this quick form](https://noteforms.com/forms/investment-transfer-requests-zjra90) to enter the queue and provide some basic information about the transfer type.
**How It Works by Investment Type:**
**For Custodian or SPV Investments:**
We'll prepare transfer documents for all parties to sign online. Once everyone has signed, your investment details are updated internally (this won't show as a visible change on your portfolio page).
**For Direct Investments:**
We'll connect you with the company founder or the right contact so you can coordinate the change directly with them.
**If You're Changing to Business Ownership:**
You'll need to upload documents proving you own the entity, typically articles of incorporation or similar ownership paperwork.
## For selling/transferring to a buyer
**Who Can You Sell To?**
Your investment's age determines who you can sell it to:
- **Within the first year:** You can sell to a family member or an accredited investor.
- **After one year:** You can sell to anyone.
**The Process:**
First, find a buyer who meets these requirements. Once you have a buyer, you'll both need to sign a formal transfer agreement. This is a legal requirement for all transfers.
The type of subscription agreement you signed when you invested determines how we handle the rest:
**For Custodian or SPV Investments:**
Wefunder manages the process and provides the formal contract for you and your buyer to sign digitally.
**For Direct Investments:**
You'll work directly with the company. We can introduce you to the founder or relevant contact to arrange the transfer.
**About Payment:**
You and your buyer handle the payment directly between yourselves. Wefunder doesn't process or mediate these payments. It's entirely between you two.
**No Transfer Fees:**
There are no fees charged for investment transfers or ownership changes. You can update your ownership without any costs from Wefunder.
